Radiomoderator Hannes Engel (Thomas Gottschalk) bekommt die Chance seines Lebens: Conrad Scheffer (Harald Schmidt), der von Querelen und Quotentiefs dauergestreßte Programmdirektor von TELE C, möchte mit ihm als Talkmaster die Late Show für ein Millionenpublikum produzieren. Sehr zum Mißfallen von Hannes' Lebensgefährtin Maria (Veronika Ferres), die gerade entnervt ihre Karriere als TV-Serienstar hingeschmissen und die Branche nun "gefressen" hat. Sehr zur Freude wiederum von Scheffers Mitarbeiterin und Geliebten Carla (Jasmin Tabatabai), die in Engel ein willkommenes Opfer ihrer Intrigenspiele findet. Und sehr zum Ärger von Finanzier Dr. August Beer (Otto Schenk), der ungeduldig auf den Bankrott des Senders wartet...
